Geographic Information Systems Developer

Duration: 2-year contract renewable

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. 
ILRI is a member of the CGIAR Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centres working with many partners for a food-secure future.

ILRI seeks to recruit a geographic information systems developer with additional skills in GIS/Remote Sensing Analysis into its Research Methods Group to provide support to ILRI research projects and institutional spatial and non-spatial data systems.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain the GIS website running on Geoportal interactive mapping software.
  • Management, sharing and exchange of spatial data within ILRI and to collaborating institutions and maintenance of the database storing spatial datasets.
  • Design, develop and maintain spatial and non-spatial data systems for agricultural research and monitoring and evaluation.
  • Design, develop and maintain web-oriented information systems for spatial and non-spatial data systems.
  • To actively seek collaboration and opportunities to provide GIS and remote sensing data manipulation and analysis input into diverse multidisciplinary ILRI projects
  • To explore and suggest innovative ways to strategically use spatial information in agricultural research and monitoring and evaluation.
Requirements
  • MSc in Information systems, Computer Science, Data management, GIS and Remote Sensing or a related discipline (BSc could be accepted in combination with at least 5 years of relevant experience).
  • At least two years of experience in software development at enterprise level.
  • At least two years of relevant experience in the development of online information systems at enterprise level.
  • Programming experience using PHP, JavaScript or Apache Flex.
  • At least two years of relevant experience on the usage of information systems for the management and analysis of spatial (GIS & Remote Sensing) and non-spatial data in agricultural research.
  • Formal training and experience using Geographical Information Systems (preferably ArcGIS and Q-GIS).
  • Formal training and experience using Image Processing Software (ENVI, ERDAS, IDRISI).
  • Experience in developing and maintaining MySQL/PostgreSQL databases on a web-based platform.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining spatial datasets and use of relevant meta-data standards.
  • Excellent English reading, writing and communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including skills in mentoring and capacity building.
  • Able to plan and prioritize work with minimum supervision.
  • Good judgement and willingness to take initiative when appropriate
Preferred skills and experience
  • Experience in the development of online GIS / Remote Sensing applications.
  • Experience on installing and customizing Geoportal.
  • Knowledge of livestock systems, natural resource management and agricultural development issues in the tropics.
  • Good knowledge of available regional and global environmental spatial datasets.
Terms of Appointment
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus and is open to Kenyan nationals only.  The position is on a 2-year contract renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

Job level and salary
This position is job level 2C with a starting gross salary of KES 116,417 per month. The benefits package includes pension, medical and other insurances provided by ILRI.

Location: 
The position will be based at the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya with travel to other countries where ILRI works.
