Technical / Workshop Manager

Position Scope

A multi-sectored manufacturing firm in the Aluminium industry in Uganda, is seeking to recruit a Workshop Manager or Technician to be based in Kampala, Uganda.

The successful candidate will be in charge of servicing machinery and tools used in the manufacturing plant such as presses, lathes, milling machines, tool room machinery, dies and tools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Determining the work prioritization and task allocation for all workshop tasks
  • Ensuring that all the machinery is maintained and kept in good order
  • Ensuring all tools, dies, punches etc re maintained to the highest standards
  • Allocating work and support to the workshop staff – manpower allocation
  • Supervising daily production targets are met and surpassed
  • Ensuring health, safety and welfare of staff in the workshop
  • Liaising with Sales, Procurements and Technical Services as required.
  • Ensuring that welding, fabrication, mechanical or machining works are carried out to the highest standards
  • Supervising, coordinating and evaluating staff
  • Plan the servicing work in advance so that the output of the factory is not affected by the service work
  • Make detailed reports on all the work that is done on each machine
  • To ensure that any parts that need replacing are available in stock and make orders in advance so as not to slow the manufacturing unit
  • Work towards improving the performance of the machine by identifying faulty parts and repair them before major problems arise in future
  • Be well versed with user manuals and operations for all machines
  • Conduct safety checks on all the machines to prevent them from being dangerous for the workers working on them
  • Keep an inventory of equipment required for the repair work
  • Know about all the latest machinery that is available in the market
  • Should inspect all the machines and make reports for the management that whether or not new machines are required
  • Production planning, resource planning and raw materials projection
  • Executing the fixed targets for production and marketing departments
  • Overall responsibilities for proper housekeeping and safety in the factory
  • tool and die background and tooling background with experience in the deep drawing, pressing field is a huge plus so experience with presses and dies with bending, blanking, forming, coining, curling, deep drawing, roll forming, shaving, trimming, sawing.
  • We are looking for the kind of person who it is directly involved on a hands on basis in solving problems, improving manufacturing efficiency, has some hands on involvement with machinery.
Qualifications /Competencies/ Experience

The ideal candidate must possess the following qualifications, experience and competencies:
  • Knowledge of presses, dies and tool room machinery is preferable – mechanically minded, hand on, and resourceful person
  • At least 5 years experience in a busy Heavy Engineering workshop, 2 of which must be at supervisory level.
  • Good management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
