Senior Communications Officer Job in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM)

ASLM’s mission is to advance the laboratory medicine services and networks needed to support preventive medicine, quality patient care and disease control in Africa.

Position Responsibilities:
 
Under the direction of the Director of Administration and Finance, the Senior Communications Officer is responsible for managing a multi-disciplinary Policy and Communications Unit team responsible for everything from performance and business management, public and media relations, partnership and economic development, and community safety. 

The position assists the Director with strategic management of the ASLM organization as well as achieving strategic and service objectives set out in the annual service plan.

Responsibilities also include, but are not limited to:
  • Representing the Director as required, and to ensure that ASLM’s vision, values and objectives are achieved by providing a clear sense of purpose and direction within Policy and Communications Unit;
  • Leading/supporting organization projects as required and, in collaboration with the ASLM Management Team, ensure that policy planning and performance management activities are coordinated across the organization;
  • Promoting good external relations by representing the Authority at national, regional and local levels
  • Assisting the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Board of Directors in developing, delivering and reviewing other strategies relevant to the organization’s development and improvement;
  • Working with the CEO to ensure effective internal communications within the Authority;
  • Overseeing consultation and engagement activity across the board, and ensure the engagement of stakeholders in work associated with the service;
  • Maintaining the ASLM.org website calendar and providing accurate and updated information on the website,  including all stories submitted by ASLM members, advertisements, sponsorships, etc,;
  • Developing press releases and articles for ASLM publications; maintaining a repository of said press releases and articles;
  • Supporting offline ASLM marketing initiatives by assisting in the design and preparation of all ASLM promotional and marketing literature within allotted division budgets;
  • Conducting periodic member surveys utilizing web-based tools; and
  • Assisting other ASLM staff as required.
Position Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in communications or related field with demonstrated professional/managerial competence in a diverse organization;
  • Ability to deliver solutions in complex situations, and the ability to manage the complexities of an emerging agenda with rapidly evolving national guidance and local circumstances;
  • Understanding of the workings of local government including knowledge of major legislative; local processes and the way in which the ASLM Board will need to respond to new legislation and initiatives;
  • Highly developed communication skills, skilled negotiator, and the ability to achieve in challenging circumstances.
